Half a Dozen Easterrific Escapades

Easter is a great time for an escapade around Cathar Country, with cooler weather for outdoor activities and the new growth and rejuvenation of Spring to enjoy. It is a colourful season, and every day we discover more natural beauty right on our doorstep: pink almond blossom that lights up the hillside; bursts of yellow from the wildflower overlooking the vineyards; explosions of red and purple from poppy and iris; and all set bright against the green rolling hills and woodland of surrounding Laure. In April, the region is also free from the crowds that clog up the more touristy spots of the Languedoc, making it a perfect excuse for a trip to the mediaeval Cité de Carcassonne or Albi.

Put a spring in your step this Easter and get out and about in the Languedoc:

1. Canal du Midi

The Canal du Midi is a short distance from Domaine de Palatz and perfect for a spot of exercise or relaxing lunch cruise (or both!). This  241 km canal, completed in 1681, is a UNESCO world heritage site and well worth a visit.

2. Languedoc Markets

The local markets are a real treat, bursting with life, colour, aromas and sounds. We have markets for every day of the week here, offering some of the finest local produce in France. For starters we can recommend Narbonne, Olonzac, Pezenas, Beziers or Nimes; let us know if you have any special favourites!

3. Cité de Carcassonne

This painstakingly restored mediaeval fortress city is another UNESCO World Heritage site. It is 20 minutes away from us and an unmissable destination – especially if you go now before the tourist hordes arrive!

4. Wine Tasting

Whether you are a complete novice or already have extensive knowledge on the subject, the tours of this exciting wine region offer something for everyone. We partner with Vin en Vacances, led by Wendy Gedney, whose knowledge of the wines of Languedoc is unmatched. Whether tasting at the domaine or out touring the many local wineries, this is always an enjoyable experience!

5. Brave the Gorges de l’Hérault

Canoeing or kayaking down the Hérault river is an original and exhilarating way to discover the incredible natural beauty of the Languedoc. Kayak season has just started, so why not take advantage: jump in at the UNESCO village of Guilhem-le-Désert and ride the rapids for a full day of awesome!

6. Albi

Another UNESCO site and a must-see if you are visiting the region. The magnificent Cathédrale Sainte-Cecile, the largest brick structure in the world when built in the 13th century, demonstrated to the defeated supporters of the Cathar movement that the Catholic Church was back in charge. There is a real juxtaposition of old and new at Albi; the streets are alive with cafés, restaurants and independent shops – a thriving culture amidst the cloisters, convents, palace and museums.

Alternatively, if you are staying with us and don’t wish to venture too far away, take a look at some enjoyable activities within a 20 minute drive.

Happy Easter!
